“Recent government initiatives and the efforts of key people in industry and education have raised the profile of design and it’s importance to industry. These initiatives have led to an increasing number of companies seeking to adopt and implement a design policy. However, it has become clear that if industry is to take full advantage of the design opportunities that exist, then they need practical guidelines to help them utilize design effectively and efficiently.

1. A design policy cannot be purchased of-the-peg it must be tailor made.

2. Do not expect a design policy to be effective if the structure does not exist to implement it.

3. Do not expect designers to understand the company if the company does not develop methods to integrate them.”

Angela Duman and Allan Withfield, 1990, “Why Design is Difficult to Manage” in Gorb, P. Ed. Design Management – papers from London Business School, Architecture Design and Technology Pressp. 24-37.
